Henry Tyrer (26 July 1868 – 1935) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Bolton Wanderers and Darwen.

1888-1889

Harry Tyrer made his League debut on 15 September 1888, playing as a winger, at Pike's Lane, then home of Bolton Wanderers. The opposition were Burnley and Bolton Wanderers lost the match 4–3. When Harry Tyrer played as a winger against Burnley on 15 September 1888 he was 20 years 51 days old; which made him, on that second weekend of League football, Bolton Wanderers' youngest player in place of James Brogan.TYRER BIO AND CAREER: Harry Tyrer scored his debut League goal on 29 September 1888, playing as a winger, at Pike's Lane when the opposition were Everton. Harry Tyrer scored the second and third goals as Bolton Wanderers won the match 6–2. Harry Tyrer played in 14 of the 22 League games played by Bolton Wanderers in season 1888-89 and scored two League goals. Harry Tyrer played as a winger in a Bolton Wanderers midfield that *isted the team achieve big (three-League-goals-or-more) wins on two occasions. Harry Tyrer two League goals came in the same matchHenry ‘Harry’ Tyrer was born on the 26th July 1868 in Halsall, Lancashire, one of ten children to George and Catherine Tyrer. He may not be known to many, but he nevertheless had a career many would be happy to have had. At the young age of 14 years his footballing talent was spotted by Eagley FC, Bolton, whom he signed on with in 1882. Turton FC the more renowned club at that time tempted him away in 1886. In 1888 Bolton Wanderers secured his signature and he made his debut on the 15th September at Pikes Lane against Burnley in a 4-3 defeat. At that time, he became the youngest player to appear for the club aged 20 years 51 days. Later that month he scored two goals in a 6-2 win against Everton, again at Pikes Lane. In all he played 14 of the 26 games the club played that season. A friendly match was arranged prior to the following season against Sunderland Albion. Harry had been to see his future wife Margaret and missed his train back. He informed the club of his error, but they were not understanding of his story and released him. He is then listed at Blackpool in 1889 but their statistics do not list their pre-league matches and his name does not appear in their records. He played for them when they won the Lancashire Junior Cup in 1890.

In 1893 he married Margaret Moorcroft in Scarisbrick, Lancashire. 1895 he is at Darwen FC with 83 games and 21 goals before a return to Turton FC in 1898. In the 1901-02 season they won the Lancashire Junior Cup. 1901 census has him living with his wife and children in Darwen Road, Bromley Cross. Turton also seems to be his last registered club. In 1911 he is still at the same address his occupation shown as a Cotton Dyer. Harry died on the 29th September 1935 at his home 14 Hough Lane, Bromley Cross, he was 67 years old. Harry was buried on the 2nd September at Christ Church, Walmsley. (Grave 265 N.G.), though unfortunately it is unmarked. Jeff Williamson BWFC Researcher.
